Kristi House has a vision to end the epidemic of child sexual abuse in Miami-Dade County. It’s a big idea, but possible, and a notion that keeps many inspired in our daily mission of healing victims. As we grow as an organization, it becomes very tempting to wander into other segments of social services, to help others. We have made a choice to stay focused. We continue to expand, but only through strategies that take us closer to our goal.

We are raising our voices and encouraging people to talk about child sexual abuse in the schools, in the boardrooms, in the cocktail lounges, and, yes, even in your homes! Through networking and education, we will all become STEWARDS of our CHILDREN. The Stewards of Children training equips participants with the facts and figures about child sexual abuse to become our ambassadors in the community. More events and messages are planned for the upcoming year as we move this mission-based project forward.

Kristi House accomplished a long anticipated goal this year–that of identifying a satellite office in the southern part of Miami-Dade. Our new location is 15321 South Dixie Highway, collocated with our medical partner, University of Miami Child Protection Team. Our newly created assessment unit completed its first year, and groundwork was laid for a full-time therapist to operate out of the south office. This location provides greater visibility in the community and better access for our clients in the extreme south. Locating a full-time intake coordinator at Jackson Hospital’s Rape Treatment Center also increased access to Kristi House for child victims of sexual abuse.

In addition to better access, this year Kristi House saw an expansion of our services to provide improved care to our clients and their families. Kristi House has adopted a welcoming policy for clients with dual mental health and substance abuse diagnosis, and is following an action plan for implementation of dual diagnosis capability. In keeping with our commitment to address child on child sexual abuse, we continue to run a therapeutic group for sexually reactive children and their caretakers.

We continue to gather the victims of sexual abuse one by one, with more than 800 children passing through our doors this year and 3,000+ children receiving school presentations aimed at preventing sexual abuse. Each time we counsel a child, each time we help a family member, each time we educate a student, each time we write an assessment or appear in court, we are moving one step closer to reversing the tide of abuse and ending the epidemic.
